July 21st – Templating in Expression Blend

July 22nd – Animating Business in Blend

Silverlight and an implementation comparison between WCF and RIA Services

We will look at two main approaches to developing Silverlight 4 Data driven application using traditional WCF and also the newly introduced RIA Services.  Using two possible patterns we will create very simple applications. We will look at pros and cons of each of the approaches. We will then look at some of each of the approaches. We will then look at some of the real world examples utilizing each of the above approaches and have some nice open ended discussions and find out how we can best utilize to improve our development.

Yang’s Bio:

Yang Xiao is an SDET on the Microsoft Visual Studio VB IDE team. She ships features including Generate from usage, No PIA, Edit and Continue, and Silverlight editing and debugging experience. Yang got her Ph.D in computer science in Arizona State University before she joined Microsoft, her research is using deltas to analyze data dependencies and semantic correctness of concurrent process execution in web services environment.

The Orlando DotNetNuke User Group (ODUG) is brining in an amazing speaker this month, so we are teaming up with them to give our members access to such a great event.  While the topic of this event is "DotNetNuke", all of the techniques, methods, and designs that are used in DNN development are globally useful to any ASP.Net developer.

ODUG Event Information

This session focuses on introducing attendees to the Model-View-Presenter pattern, support for which was recently introduced in the DotNetNuke Core. We'll start with a quick overview of the pattern, compare it to MVC, and then dive right into code. We will start with fundamentals and then develop a full-featured module using this pattern. In order to do justice to the pattern, we will use ASP.NET WebForms controls minimally and implement most of the UI using jQuery plug-ins. Finally, to increase audience participation (both present at the meeting and remote), we will use a hackathon-style model and allow anybody, anywhere to follow along with the presentation and code their own MVP-based solution that they can share online during or after the session. A URL with full instructions for the hackathon will be posted online a few days prior to the meeting.

Nik Kalyani is Co-founder and Strategic Advisor for DotNetNuke Corp., the company that manages the DotNetNuke Open Source project. Kalyani is also Founder and CEO of HyperCrunch. He is a technology entrepreneur with over 18 years of experience in the software industry. He is irrationally exuberant about technology, especially if it has anything to do with the Internet. HyperCrunch is his latest startup business that builds on his knowledge and experience from prior startups, two of them venture-funded.

Kalyani is a creative tinkerer perpetually interested in looking around the corner and figuring out new and interesting ways to make the world a better place. An experienced web developer, he finds the business strategy and marketing aspects of the software business more exciting than writing code. When he does create software, his primary expertise is in creating products with compelling user experiences. Kalyani is most proficient with Microsoft technologies, but has no religious fanaticism about them.

Hackathon

Hackathons are developer events with a goal of increasing developer knowledge on a specific technology aspect in a casual, collaborative environment. They are also designed to encourage participation by people who are not familiar with the technology, basically providing them with an immersive quick start.

Hackathon Events are:

• built around a single programming concept (for example: DotNetNuke MVP Pattern)
• encourage participation locally (at event site) and remotely
• are broadcast online
• provide materials and dev environment setup guidelines ahead of time
• allow anybody to participate
• are peer-judged by the Hackathon participants
• have one or more winners who earn the title "Hackmaster"
• have great prizes for winners and runners up
• require all submissions to be Open Source with MIT license
